How Photovoltaic Systems work
Solar Photovoltaic systems capture the sun’s energy using solar photovoltaic cells. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. Photovoltaic solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to work, you can still generate electricity on a cloudy day.
Solar PV panels (usually fitted to the roof on your home) convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity which is then converted into alternating current (AC) by inverters. This electricity can be used in the home or exported back to the national grid.
Given the unpredictability of the weather here in the United Kingdom, you may ask is it technically or financially viable to use photovoltaics as an energy option. The fact is, photovoltaic systems do not require bright sunlight to operate and will produce energy on cloudy or even rainy days.
The inverter is an important part a photovoltaic system. It ensures that the output voltage from the PV modules is slightly higher than the voltage coming from the national grid. This means that appliances will use the electricity from the PV system before drawing from the grid, thus reducing consumption of more expensive electricity. Surplus electricity from the PV system will be automatically exported back to the national grid.
The Benefits of using Photovoltaic Solar energy
Solar energy is free, clean, and safe.
A solar power system converts daylight / sunlight into electricity, even on cloudy days.
Solar PV is environmentally friendly and produces no waste or pollution.
Solar PV panels will cut your energy bills and, thanks to theFeed-in-Tariff (FIT) scheme, you may be better off during the lifetime of the scheme thanks to guaranteed, tax-free, index-linked payments made directly to you from your energy company.
The feed in tariff is a key part of the governments Renewable Energy Strategy to ensure that at least 1/3 of all electricity is generated from renewable energy sources by 2020.
By investing in a solar photovoltaic system you will reduce your dependancy on other energy forms, giving you the opportunity to save money by selling surplus electricity back to the national grid.
Please contact us with any queries about our solar PV installation service and we will be happy to offer you advice and talk you through the installation and funding (FIT) process. We have solar PV experts on hand to deal with your enquiries.
