Durham Pathways - Decarbonisation

RPS have delivered a whole-building decarbonisation project for Durham Pathways, a Durham County Council service.

Who are Durham Pathways?

Pathways are a specialist service that provide support and care for those with complex care and support needs. Pathways provide a range of services and activities that promote independence and inclusion. Such as:

·         Various Therapies

·         Education

·         Community Activities

Based in a large, single-storey building dating from the 1970s, RPS have removed gas from the site entirely and replacing it with a low carbon heating and hot water system, supported by fabric and energy efficiency improvements.

The Challenge

The building remained fully operational throughout the programme, with vulnerable service users attending the centre every day. Minimising disruption was a key priority.

RPS worked closely with Durham Pathways staff, providing daily updates on planned activities to ensure the service could continue to operate safely. At the end of each shift, work areas were cleaned, made safe and secured, maintaining a safe environment for both service users and staff while the project progressed

Project Completion

The project included the installation of Four Mitsubishi Air Source Heat Pumps. The completion of this project is expected to save 23 tonnes CO₂ per annum — 460 tonnes over system lifetime supporting Durham County Council's decarbonisation ambitions.
